A.B.A.D 03/01/12: Bat For Lashes “Glass”
This caught my attention ages ago, definitely worth including. Played on the record (and live initially) by the brilliant Alex Thomas. More recently Sarah Jones nailed it live.
At Glastonbury a few years ago..
There’s some sequenced drums, then these come on top. I’ve notated the basic 2 bar groove. Sarah varies it quite a lot in the vid – namely moving it around the kit and filling into the changes. The chorus is a great progression to, but I just wanted to capture this badass verse.
*geeknote – there’s a 4 stroke ruff in here…
A.B.A.D 02/01/12: Tom Vek “Hold Your Hand”
I love this beat from Tom Vek. Very effective, simple yet tricky at the same time.
The verse repeats like this..
In the chorus it becomes a 2 bar pattern and he adds an open hat and a clap/crash/smash sample from the DrumKat on beat 3 (you’ll hear it).
Boom. I could play this one all day.

Happy New Year!
Here’s a song I’ve enjoyed since it’s release a few months back – Feist’s “The Bad in Each Other”. The verse groove stuck out immediately; I think its a rhythmically interesting thing to do in 6 time and love the sounds. Seems they hit a few things to make it work live.
This inspired my playing on a recent session (will post asap), had a lot of fun with a very old snare, a homemade walnut shaker and a big marching bass drum mallet I got when I was 13…
